Decisions decisions

Since I last wrote, after much research, we have decided to switch care from an ob to a midwife and have a home birth. Sharing the news with family has been stressful, and in some cases, painful. But as long as little Allison Faith and I stay healthy and normal it is the best decision for us.

We are also in the middle of house shopping. Things are getting bothersome because we would really like to have a home before the home birth...

First Post

I'm just gonna see if this is the best way to communicate all that's going on with our little family. Currently we are in Pleasant Hill, California for the next couple of weeks for Randy's work. I am approaching 20 weeks pregnant and I dare say it's been quite pleasant (even though I have had discomforts) because I have been fortunate enough to stay at home and get rest whenever I need it.

Randy and I went to the doctor for the level 2 ultrasound last week.
It was amazing. The baby is moving around so much more than I could have realized! When the doctor showed us the baby’s face, we also saw his/her little arm and hand come forth and wave at us. That happened twice during the appointment. Then when he showed us a side profile of the baby, we watched the baby hiccup. When we got around to trying to find out the gender, the umbilical cord, which is as big as the baby’s legs was going right between the baby’s legs, so the doc couldn’t get a view at all. The baby was dancing so much we all thought he/she might get out of the tangle, so after the doc made a few more measurements he went back for another try. Not only was the baby in the same predicament, but we watched two little hands come down and cover him/herself over the umbilical cord, over the genitals. The doc said the baby knew what we were up to!

Yesterday Randy got home and at one point asked if I grew since the night before. I am getting a lot bigger and I feel the baby every day! At our ultrasound, the baby’s head was almost at my belly button. I guess I will have an outtie before too much longer. It’s ok that the baby is breech right now, because he/she can still move around so freely. Everything is going great, and the baby is right on schedule.

We have another ultrasound when we get back at the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital (where our baby will be born). Hopefully we can find out boy or girl then!! The ultrasound we just had might have been a mis-scheduled one, because even though they told us to expect it, they weren’t prepared to do it. I will send out pictures soon, either when I get back home, or if I can come by a scanner in Pleasant Hill.

CA is okay; we have some fun stuff planned for the weekend. I don’t really last all day so we can't pack in the fun like last time. If I feel up to it I can walk to a few little places in the neighborhood within a mile of where our apartment is while Randy is gone. Yesterday I cleaned up after these boys... I believe there were surfaces that had not been wiped since they got here in January…

We went into a Texas BBQ place over here because it was within walking distance from apartment and we didn’t have a car yet. The waitress told us she knew we weren’t form around after the first thing I asked her was “Do y’all have any Dr. Pepper here?”

We went into San Francisco on Saturday but it was so crazy and crowded (weekend before St Patrick’s day Tuesday) that we couldn’t make it to Chinatown before deciding to just take the BART back home. (the BART is stinky and loud and makes your ears pop, but it is fast and cheap for the masses) For us the trip to town was basically making it from bathroom to bathroom…even if that meant we had to backtrack…

We saw a very risqué play that night with some of our friends that live over here temporarily (they will move back to Houston soon). It was hilarious. While they were waiting outside for us to return from the bathroom afterwards, two gay guys stood right next to them and kissed. I hope the baby isn’t getting any of this California nuttiness! I love Texas!!
